Harden Sidney Melville (also known as H. S. Melville) is mentioned in the Society’s Transactions 1837, when he was awarded a Silver medal for a composition in oils of 'Figures in a Landscape'. This trial painting is an oil painting on a Windsor and Newton commercially primed board and is entitled 'Study of a Horse in Stable'. This is unusual as trial paintings were more usually copies of a section, or sections from the painting/drawing submitted for the prize.
