Gamble creates imaginary landscapes that are inspired by remembered coastal scenes and experiences. Whilst the landscape is invented, its depiction is motivated by memories of real places Gamble has encountered. The splashes, drips, splats and explosions of paint convey the vivacity of nature and the artist’s excitement at being by the coast. There is a mixture of realism and abstraction in his work which reflects the subjectivity of memory – the idealism of happy remembrance colouring and deepening a record of an experience.
