A rapid sketch from the 'Castilian'. The artist has concentrated on the tonal relationship between sea, sky and land. An outline of land is shown in profile on the left as a dark grey mass loosely painted. The sea is layers of rapidly applied paint in tones of grey becoming darker closer to the horizon. The movement of waves is indicated as small dashes of paint varying in tone from dark grey to white. The sky is shown in lighter shades of grey and the paint is thicker on the right and tinted lemon to indicate the light from the sun. The reflection from this light plays across the surface of the water on the right. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of the Second World War.
