'The Sea Swallow' is one of a series of artworks on the Mythic Coast story trail along Cleveleys promenade inspired by the storybook ‘The Sea Swallow’. The book, written by Gareth Thompson and illustrated by Hannah Megee, tells the tale of an Ogre stirring up the sea with his giant paddle, threatening the Wyre waterfront community, only to be thwarted by the story's hero Mary and her golden shell. The sculpture was intended to have a feel of a book coming to life, with the two sea swallows cut at the top of the metal column as if they are emerging from the page. A montage of illustrations from the book along with the opening paragraph and the very last sentence from the story can be seen on the plinth and at the base of the sculpture.

Inscription description

plinth: The Sea Swallow / Down in Lune Deep / Far below the sea / Something sparkles / Like sunken treasure. / A strange boy is watching / But steals away in a flash / As the Sea-Ogre stirs / And our story begins; plinth: For at night they stand together on/ the sea wall, as if protecting / the town with their great white wings; around base of plinth: Nobody knows when Mary left the Golden Shell - most folk think she gave it to Finn, but others say it lies buried on the beach, maybe. Somewhere along the coast, the shell waits for someone to find it again.
