A kneeling statue of the poet, Sappho. This is a copy of the original by Thomas Nelson MacLean, which was given by the sculptor's wife to the garden city in 1907. In 1936, the original statue was moved from its original location on the corner of Station Way and Broadwater Avenue to the Ball Memorial Garden, but was stolen in May 1998. The statue of Sappho is said to have been sited in Letchworth to depict the historic link between the garden city and women’s suffrage.
