Zadie Smith (Sadie Adeline Smith) is a British novelist, essayist, and short-story writer. Born 1975 to an English father and Jamaican mother in North West London, Smith graduated with a first in English from Cambridge. She won the Whitbread First Novel Award for her first book 'White Teeth', set in Willesden where she was born. Since its publication, 'White Teeth' has remained on the bestseller lists and has been adapted for a television series. Smith was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2002. Her second novel 'The Autograph Man' was published in the autumn of 2002. Many of her subsequent books (including 'NW', 'On Beauty' and 'Swing Time') have received substantial critical acclaim. Her collection of essays, 'Feel Free', was published in 2018.
