Fiennes (1921–2010), 3rd Baron Cornwallis, was Pro Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1982 to 1991. The Pro Grand Master is the representative of the Grand Master when he is unable to attend meetings. This portrait was commissioned by the United Grand Lodge of England. The cricket ball in the foreground is a reference to the links between the Cornwallis family and Kent County Cricket Club. Wykeham Stanley, 2nd Baron Cornwallis, played for the club in the early 1920s. The initials ‘DL’ following Lord Cornwallis’s name in the title, refer to his position as Deputy Lieutenant of Kent.
