The Latin inscription on this painting ‘Memor esto' quam sis brevis evi’ translates as ‘Life is short, Memory is long’. The other words indicate that the sitter was 77 years old when his portrait was painted. What do the clothes tell us about the sitter? The gentleman wears a thick fur-trimmed winter coat, which is decorated with balls of fur. Underneath he has a waistcoat with many buttons, a lace-edged shirt and a stiff lace ruff. He is wearing a fashionable hat and carries a cane and book. He has rings on his fingers and one thumb. All these items indicate that the portrait is of a wealthy gentleman, who was probably quite religious, as the book is likely to be a Bible.
