Ania Grzesik views the hospital less as a building or an environment and more as a collection of people. The four oil paintings on board by Grzesik in the hospital are a direct result of interaction with individuals she encountered, the work routines she observed and other activities beyond the hospital of which staff told her. Although essentially portraits of individuals doing specific tasks, the works also act as a metaphor for the many personalities of the hospital and the varied activities that go on both inside and outside its confines. The Nurses' Station at night reminds us that the hospital never sleeps; that for 24 hours a day, every day, it is vigilant and alive. The painting is one of 20 commissions by contemporary artists in the public spaces of Dorset County Hospital and is part of the ‘Bringing the Outside In’ project.
