This painting, with its solidly modelled figures, is reminiscent of Picasso’s classical period. Medley would have been familiar with Picasso’s work as he lived in Paris during the late 1920s with the dancer, Rupert Doone. As well as being a painter, Robert Medley was a theatre designer, designing sets for T. S. Eliot and W. H. Auden. His work was influenced by the Bloomsbury group and Surrealism, exploring social and humanist themes.
