This painting depicts Mary, Queen of Scots and David Rizzio, her secretary. Both were Catholics, and Scottish noble men (who were mostly Protestant) resented his influence over her. They eventually murdered him in front of her. The political situation became so difficult that Mary fled to England leaving her son James behind, where he became King James VI of Scotland.

Mary was the heir to the English throne and Queen Elizabeth I (her cousin) treated her as a threat. Mary spent 20 years in England as a prisoner near Rotherham. She even visited here in 1569 when one of her ladies became ill. Elizabeth was so concerned about Mary that she had her executed.

Herbert was born in Maldon in Essex and attended the Royal Academy Schools. He made a living as a portrait painter and a book illustrator.
