As the sitter has the collar of SS, the portrait is datable 1766–1771 when Wilmot (1709–1792) held the office of Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas. A portrait by Dance-Holland was recorded at Wimpole (Earl of Hardwicke) in 1798, and another whole-length version is owned by the Ministry of Works (previously on loan to the Royal Courts of Justice). Wilmot was also painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, RA, in 1785. A portrait of around 1750–1760 in plain clothes, by Joseph Wright, half-length to the right, was lent by the Ministry of Works to the Law Courts Library. The Ministry of Works picture is stated to have been bought by Wiggins at Bedwell Hall, Herts, 13 November 1945. Neither is signed or dated.
