Born on 2 March 1872, Murphy was privately educated and went into the Militia before joining the Suffolk Regiment as a second lieutenant in December 1893. He took a commission in the Indian Army in 1909, serving with the 30th Punjabis, 19th Punjabis and 14th Punjab Regiment. He was promoted lieutenant colonel in 1919 and retired on his 52nd birthday, 2 March 1924.
