The title is Italian and means 'The Cradle'. A watercolour study for this Diploma Work entitled 'Study in Italy, La Culla' appears to have been exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibition in 1859, catalogue number 583. The Diploma Work depicts a mother and child within an Italian setting. Herdman had travelled in Italy in 1855 making copies of frescoes for the RSA and studying Italian life. An Italian visitor to the RSA suggested that the dress of the Italian woman was more southern in style and that the buildings have a more northern Italian appearance.
