The 'Green Man' is formed of three keystones, carved into heads, joined together. The head in the middle faces onto Exchange Square, while the head at one end, faces the A66 flyover on the left (as you look at them) and the other faces towards the station on the right. The head in the middle has ears of wheat sprouting from it to symbolise the bounty and plenty of trade, the left head has a warrior's helmet (alluding to Britain's naval power) and the right hand head has cogs and tools on its brow representing the town's industry. The heads come from the Royal Exchange Building which was opened in 1868 and demolished in February 1985 to make way for the A66.
