Born in Viliers-le-Bel, France, the artist was a student of the French painter Edouard Frere. This painting is typical of the decorative peasant scene, which became popular among the Parisian bourgeoisie in the second half of the nineteenth century.

A young girl is shown cutting up rags in order to dress her doll, which is propped up on a wooden chair in front of her. The girl’s own clothes are indicative of provincial costume of the time.

The artist has chosen to portray a comfortable but modest peasant dwelling, rather than depicting the misery and depravation of the poor, the girl’s playful activity and simple interior concentrating upon contentment in the humble surroundings.
