A Portland stone, bibbed terminus figure by Giovanni Battista Guelfi. One of 33 commissioned by Lord Burlington for the gardens at Chiswick. The Italian sculptor had been in high demand since Burlington became his patron in 1720 but a new generation of sculptors and increased criticism of his temperament threatened his monopoly. Burlington willingly parted company with Guelfi, who returned to Italy in 1734. The female head turns to the right, the sides curve and taper towards the ground, accentuating the femininity of the figure. Greek style long, wavy hair is bound with ribbon that drapes over the term’s right shoulder. The nose is missing, the neck shows two clear fracture lines and there is visible environmental damage. Terminus was a Roman god who protected boundary markers and property.
