Faced with Bath stone ashlar, the fountain is rectangular in plan and elevation, with a heavy cornice and truncated pediment. The tympanum contains a much-eroded relief of the coat of arms of the city of Bristol in the same stone. Beneath the cornice isa polished red granite frieze on three sides. In keeping with the fountain’s agricultural origins, this frieze is decorated with the heads of farm animals in cast iron, painted matt terracotta. The narrow west and east ends each have a single ram’s head with curled horns. The main facade has three heads: from left to right, a bull, a horse and a cow. The drinking fountain in the façade is contained in an arch formed by deep semi-circular moulding of Mansfield stone that runs on three sides.
