information plaque: LUDGERSHALL CROSS / The surviving lower part of a 14th century high / cross which once stood in the medieval market / place (about 50 metres to the south-west) King Edward III and Queen Philippa would stay in / Ludgershall castle around this time and the small / town became economically and culturally important / in the region. The cross shaft has fine sculpture / showing scenes from the death of Jesus including, / on the east face, the Decent from the Cross
