Colonel Lodge was born on in August 1855 in Bishopdale, near Aysgarth, North Yorkshire. He joined the 5th West York Militia at 18 which became the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment in 1881. He served with the battalion in the 2nd Boer War (1899–1902). From 1906 to 1912, he served as the Battalion Commander. He rejoined as Major on the outbreak of the First World War, remaining there until 1916 when he was appointed command of a Garrison Battalion, a position he held until his death in 1917 after a short illness at the age of 60. He served and had been associated with the regiment for 43 years.
