A coat of arms set into a rectangular niche situated above an archway on Richmond Palace wall leading to Old Palace Yard. The arms consist of a standing dog and dragon holding a crest decorated with lions and fleurs de lys surmounted by a crown. Below the arms runs a row of dentils and a decorative panel of thistle flowers and leaves. The arms are those of Henry VII who built Richmond Palace in the sixteenth century. Henry took the dragon of Wales as his emblem in reference to his Welsh ancestry. The archway into Old Palace Yard is one of the few remaining fragments of the old palace, which was destroyed under the Commonwealth in the seventeenth century. The arms were completely restored in 1976.
