An eighteenth-century copy of an original 1649 posthumous portrait of Charles I at his trial by Edward Bower.

Charles I was put on trial for treason in January 1649. The dark clothes he is wearing in this portrait reflect the sombre nature of the occasion. The gold locket which is hung around his neck and the star badge on his cloak is the insignia of the Royal Order of the Garter of Saint George. The locket was always worn by the king and can be seen in other portraits from the period. In his right hand, he holds the notes for a speech he intended to make at his trial.

Charles I was executed at Whitehall on 30th January 1649.
