William Hall, the father of Chambers Hall, spent twenty years in the ships of the East India Company, the later years as Captain. He is said to have been instrumental in arranging Zoffany's journey to India in 1783 and this portrait of Hall in the uniform of a Captain in the East India Company probably dates from that period. The attribution is traditional but doubtful.
