This is a mid-eighteenth-century English copy of an original canvas by Jan Frans von Bloemen, nicknamed 'Orizzonte'. Although the original was recorded as location unknown in 1974, it appeared on the London art market in 1996. No provenance earlier than the early twentieth century is known for this work, but it must have been in England in the mid-eighteenth century to enable the present copy to have been painted. The subject is a type popular in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
