Ariel from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', a spirit, is shown leaping from a pond in a ballet pose, with his torso and arms reaching back. He is supported above water by a curving web of bronze stretching from the length of his outstretched leg along his back and lower arm. The work was bronze cast by Meridian Foundry. Describing the project, the artist says: 'In 1986 I made two bronze sculptures – 'Ariel' and 'Belphoebe' for Manor Park, Runcorn. My sculpture of Ariel is male, and whilst sometimes female actors take the part, he was played by men in Shakespeare's time and referred to as he. I did work with a female dancer, Jackie Rowing, on initial basics of the pose for both sculptures, and then made a series of maquettes to explore Ariel further.
