The man studying in the foreground is very similar to a Pharisee in a large painting of Christ among the doctors, by Jusepe Ribera. One version of Ribera's painting, today in Vienna, was in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614–1662), Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, whose collection of paintings was curated and published by David Teniers the younger, designer of this composition in which the Pharisee has become an alchemist.
