Alan MacLeod was born in Liverpool and took his BA at Liverpool University, before studying at Westminster College, Cambridge, from 1932 to 1936. He was ordained for the mission field in 1936 and served in Rajshahi (then in Bengal), from 1936 until 1955. From 1951 he was the Principal of the Bengali language school for missionaries. In 1955 he was called to become the Professor of Old Testament Theology at Westminster College, Cambridge, and in 1963 he became the Principal of the College. He was twice called to be Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of England in 1967, and again in 1972 as the United Reformed Church was formed.
