This dramatic painting of a lion hunt was purchased by William I Blathwayt (1649?–1717) in 1693, through the Flemish artist Jan Siberechts (1627–1703). The distinctive colouring of the lion, which rears up in the centre of the composition as it is attacked by hounds, is noted in the list of paintings purchased through Siberechts, where it appears as 'ye red Lion'. It was formerly attributed to the Flemish artist Frans Snyders (1759–1657), but it is now thought to be painted after a work by his pupil Jan Fyt in the style of Frans Snyders.
