Arthur Hill was born in Nottingham in 1841, the son of a lace maker, and went to the art school there. He moved to London in about 1875. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institute, and became a member of the Society of British Artists. He was married, but seems to have separated from his wife. He died in Devon in 1908.
