(b Bletchingley, Surrey, 8 Dec. 1831; d London, 7 Jan. 1902). English painter, mainly of coastal scenes and landscapes. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and Ruskin (whose work he read avidly), and a handful of his early paintings, such as The Stonebreaker (1857–8, Walker AG, Liverpool), are tours de force of minute and brilliant detail. His later work, however, tended to become laboured and he died virtually forgotten. His sister Rosa Brett (1829–82) was also a painter.
