Painter of abstract pictures, printmaker, installations artist and teacher, born in West Hartlepool, County Durham. From 1950–5 he studied at West Hartlepool College of Art, moving to the Royal Academy Schools, 1957–61. The following year Beattie began teaching at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art. Beattie showed in groups at John Moores Exhibition in Liverpool, in 1965; in 1971 at Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, in Four Painters; and in 1977 at RA in British Painting 1952–1977. In 1976 he won a Major Arts Council Award. His first one-man show was at Greenwich Theatre Art Gallery in 1968, after which he showed widely, including Minories, Colchester; and Bede Gallery, Jarrow; as well as several galleries in London, including Advanced Graphics London, 2001.
