A rural landscape with a thatched cottage and barn to the right, and a flat open pathway to the left. Three figures stand next to a dilapidated wooden fence in the bottom right corner, one, dressed in blue, bends forward to talk to the other two, one of which is seated on a pile of hay. Another man climbs up a ladder which leans against the barn towards a figure standing in an opening on the upper level, a third man forking hay on the ground below. Light falls across the scene, which is mostly painted in subdued colours, giving the pile of hay a golden glow. A bright blue sky is just visible through heavy mottled effect cloud.
