Artist and teacher, born in Coventry, Warwickshire, who settled in the county at Bilton, Rugby. She graduated in fine art from Coventry University, 1962–6, taught by Terry Frost and Michael Sandle; gained her Art Teacher’s Certificate at London University Institute of Education, 1966–7; then pursued a teaching career which included her own adult education art classes, talks and demonstrations. Brain said of her work that it reflected her “affinity with the natural world.” Her oil paintings could be “both benign and unsettling”, her works on paper setting out to “record the actuality of objects in an acute and penetrating way.” Annie Brain was a founder-member and chairman of Rugby Artists’ Support Group, chairman of the Association of Midland Artists, a member of the Tantalus Project, Leamington Studio Artists and Rugby and District Art Society.
