Dublin-born Moore found fame as a poet and balladeer. His ballads were hugely popular, and were published as Moore's Irish Melodies in 1846 and 1852. He had success as a society figure in London. In 1803 was appointed registrar to the Admiralty in Bermuda. Moore returned to England in 1804; the deputy he left in his place absconded, leaving Moore with a debt that forced him to live abroad for years. During this time he visited Byron in Italy, whose literary executor he became. He also wrote Byron's biography, Letters and Journals of Lord Byron, with Notices of his Life (1830). Moore's contemporaries saw him as a major poet. Today, however, he is remembered mainly as an associate of Byron.
