Thomas Docwra was Grand Prior of the Order of St John from 1501 until his death in 1527.
The Maltese artist gave this painting as a gift in 1925, one of the first indications of a direct relationship between him and the Order of St John, which would lead to a string of commissions in the following years.

The Order's English Headquarters, St John's Gate, was built during Docwra's time and can be seen in the background of this painting.
The Prior of the Order was an important role within English society, and Docwra acted as a public servant for Henry VII.
