Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, the Indian Military Academy (IMA) at Dehradun was established in 1932 to train Indian soldiers as officers to staff the then British-run Indian Army. Initially the academy ran a 30-month course producing 35 to 40 officers each time but, on the outbreak of the Second World War, the programme was radically changed, being reduced to six months and it produced nearly 4,000 officers during the course of the war. Following India’s independence, the academy underwent various changes of name but has reverted back to the IMA. It has trained many thousands of officers, including many from foreign armies, from the West Indies to Singapore.
