William Jones (Fellow 1766–1783) left his Fellowship of the College to become a Judge of Bengal. He founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal but died in Calcutta before he was fifty. He married Anna Maria, daughter of Jonathan Shipley, Bishop of St. Asaph, in 1783, before leaving for India. She commissioned the monument from Flaxman, which was originally designed by Lady Jones to be sent to Calcutta, but the East India Company decided to erect one to him at St. Paul's (the statue of Sir William Jones, by John Bacon R.A., is one of the four full length marble figures under the dome of St. Paul's). Instead it was presented to the College and the monument which had been prepared for the ante-chapel by Sir Robert Chambers was erected in 1802 in the University Church.
