Thomas Mansel (1556–1631) of Margam, Glamorgan, married as his second wife Jane Pole. The Mansels, one of the wealthiest families in South Wales, owned the estates formerly belonging to Margam Abbey. Mansel was MP for Glamorgan in 1597, 1604 and 1614. He bought a baronetcy in 1611. Painted about 1625, husband and wife are touchingly shown holding hands. The marigold held by Lady Mansel is perhaps a symbol of their daughter Mary.
