This Hawaiian quilt celebrates the carnation flower. The plant was introduced to the islands by settlers in the first half of the nineteenth century. It quickly became one of the most popular flowers for leis – the floral garlands used at flower festivals.

The pattern of appliqué flowers is called ‘poni-moi’ – which translates as ‘coronation of a king', but it is often confused with carnation.
