In 1996, marking the parish boundaries along the River Tees in County Durham was the first public art project to be funded by the National Lottery. The complete set of 11 parish boundary markers span from Middleton-in-Teesdale to Gainford, along the north and south banks of the Tees. This pair, sited either side of the road bridge over Deepdale Beck on the B6277, is one of the set of 11 pairs of cast iron posts which are sometimes referred to as bollards or chimney pots, but actually are more akin to milk churns and representing an amalgam of several ideas drawn by the artist from the Teesdale environment. Each cast iron post has been split in two and the two halves stood on either side of a boundary in such a way as to allow passers-by to reunite the posts in their mind’s eye each time they cross from one parish to another.
