Portrait of the maternal grandmother of the artist; she is seated with her hands placed on her lap and a crocheted shawl draped over her shoulders. She has a steely, defiant look in her eyes. Cooper was born in Tettenhall, near Wolverhampton and became a leading portrait painter of his time. He began his art training at the Bilston School of Art and later the Royal College of Art, London where he graduated in 1911. Whilst studying in London, Cooper's talent caught the attention of the eminent artist, John Singer Sargent, who employed him as a studio assistant at his Tite Street studio in Chelsea. He became a war artist for the Royal Air Force at the end of the Great War and then embarked on a successful career as a portrait painter, although he continued to paint landscapes.
On the reverse is a pencil sketch of a classical nude scene.
