The town’s canine benefactor was a Siamese prince related to King Mongkut, on whose life the musical 'The King and I' was based. Prince Chula Chakrabongse of Thailand lived near Bodmin at Tregarthy from 1938 until his death in 1963. He was a journalist and broadcaster and was made a Freeman of the town in 1958. The trough is dedicated to two of his dogs, Joan, a wire haired terrier, and a bulldog named Hercules. He presented a similar trough to the city of Cambridge, which was dedicated to his dog Tony.
