The Layland-Barratts lived at the Manor House on the slopes above Hesketh Crescent, Torquay. They were great supporters of the old Torquay Hospital, and assisted the campaign for its replacement.

A versatile artist and playwright, Prinsep was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. Born in Calcutta, he lived in Paris and London. An important figure in nineteenth-century British painting his work is displayed in many museums, including the Ashmolean, Oxford; Manchester City Art Galleries; the National Portrait Gallery; and Tate, London.
