A Celtic cross on a tapering rusticated, cyclopean base of granite. This is surrounded by a fence with granite boulder posts and galvanised tubular supports. The cross commemorates the battle of Flodden fought on 9 September 1513, the last pitched battle between Scotland and England and the last battle on English soil in which knights in armour fought under personal banners. An information board erected by Northumberland County County Council beside the protective fence illustrates the positions of the armies during the battle.

The memorial was unveiled by Sir George Douglas of Kelso, poet and essayist, with a thousand people present. It has since been the scene of an annual cavalcade and wreath-laying ceremony.
