The gentleman in this painting has not been identified though it has been suggested that he could be George Parker, 2nd Earl Macclesfield or, according to a pencilled inscription on the painting stretcher 'Probably Farquarsson the astronomer'. But he is most likely a nobleman, posing beside shelves of books and instruments including an orrery (planetarium), globe and microscope.
