Figure and portrait painter, born in Russia, son of a well-known actor. He studied drawing with Abraham Yaskil, 1959; at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem, 1967; and classical technique under Ernst Fuchs, 1969. Lectured at The Hebrew University, Jerusalem, 1979. In 1987 Zohar moved to England, settling in north London, having visited on a study tour which included the Netherlands in 1969. There Vermeer and Dutch genre painting made a lasting impression on his work. Had a solo show at Ahura Doron Gallery, Tel-Aviv, 1970; a retrospective in Jerusalem, 1982; another at Musée de L’Athenée, Geneva, 1987; and a solo exhibition at Roy Miles Gallery, 1989; later shows including The Human Being at Catto Gallery in 1999, another in 2001. Among Zohar’s commissions was a portrait of the poet Dame Edith Sitwell for the Hampstead Festival in 1995.
