Self-taught artist, born in Liverpool, who settled in the Isle of Man in 1975, having started to paint seriously five years earlier. As well as painting, Schaer produced lino-cuts and odd creatures and heads from papier mâché. Schaer said that she was “surprised by the characters that emerge from my doodles”, people, animals and birds that have been described as “often reinacting a poetic drama.” Art collector, writer and jazz musician George Melly said that: “Once you’ve taken in her work, you would never confuse it with anyone else’s.” Schaer was included in Obsessive Visions at England & Co in 2001.
