Artist, born in Leyburn, Yorkshire, who early developed a gift for painting and drawing. Aged 14 she gained the Hatton Scholarship to attend Newcastle School of Art, but had to wait two years before she was able to join classes because of the rules. In 1933 she married the artist Fred Lawson and their work and that of their daughter Sonia Lawson was featured in A Family of Artists, organised by Wakefield Art Gallery in 1989; it holds her work and held a memorial show, chosen by Sonia Lawson, in 2002. Contributed to Yorkshire Artists shows at Leeds, Bradford and Scarborough; showed at Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; and in 1957 exhibited jointly with her daughter at Dewsbury Art Gallery. St Margaret’s Church, Preston-under-Scar, commissioned a mural from Metcalfe in 1932.
