Painter, teacher, writer and editor, born in Peterborough, Huntingdonshire, who attended Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting. Garrard taught Latin at Summerfields School, Oxford; was commissioned with the Suffolk Regiment during National Service; taught at Byam Shaw; wrote for and became editor of The Artist magazine, 1972–9; started an art workshop at Mary Ward Centre; was a judge for the Shell Children’s Art Competition and chairman of judges for the Spirit of London Art Competition; and ran numerous painting holidays in Britain and abroad. He edited the ninth edition of The Artist’s Guide, 1976, and was author of Learn to Paint in Oils, 1980. Garrard, who signed his work PJG, was an exhibitor at the RA Summer Exhibition annually from 1954–87, also taking part in mixed shows in the provinces and London.
