Focussed around the cities of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, this volume reproduces over 1,200 paintings from 23 collections. The large collections including the Cooper Gallery, Barnsley Museum and Heritage Service, Doncaster Museum Service, Brodsworth Hall (English Heritage) and Rotherham Museum & Art Gallery are of National significance. However, this volume also includes hitherto uncatalogued works from the region’s colleges, police stations and hospitals. Works by Sir Joseph Highmore and William Hogarth sit alongside those by Flemish and Dutch Masters. Lesser-known artists appear beside Rolf Harris and Terence Cuneo. The result is a vibrant, unique, insight into centuries of the region's artistic heritage.
